Pete Rose, the all time hit leader, was banned from baseball in 1989 after an investigation into the details of his gambling habits. He is known as Mr Hustle because he ran hard, dove for every ball and demolished anyone protecting the plate. (even during a 1970 ALL STAR GAME...who does that?) That name also applies to his gambling habits.... Anyway, with 4, 256 hits he ranks above greats like Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth and even modern powerhouses like Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds. I am not sure of the full details as not everything has been released for privacy. However, he was clearly recorded and transacted money with bookies. He later admitted to gambling in a book under the auspices that he would be extended the grace of the Hall of Fame. He died somewhat broken but always was himself and I rate his "hustle on the field" to be unmatched but his "hustle in gambling while involved with baseball," to lack integrity and brings some shame to the game. Baseball, however, has had its highs and lows and would break its own shield while scores of viewers showed up to watch STEROID HEADS grow bigger and bigger...We in America loved watching 60 year old records start to topple but I only knew of the doping afterwards. MR Hustle didn't shoot up on steroids to achieve his greatness, but it is possible he failed to win games on purpose IOT win some bets. (that's unacceptable..............also). I still think Mr Hustle deserves something even if its only to look at his career with a little bit of rose colored glasses.
